Stinging Insects

An outdoor risk pest that can make common areas unsafe to use
Stinging insects are a major concern when they build nests near doors, patios, soffits, playgrounds, mailboxes, or work areas. Even a small nest can quickly become a safety issue for children, pets, employees, and anyone with sting sensitivity.

About the Pest

Stinging insects often build in sheltered exterior locations such as rooflines, eaves, porch ceilings, fence lines, shrubs, wall voids, and utility fixtures. In Florida conditions, repeated nesting can occur throughout the warmer parts of the year if attractive harborage stays available.

Signs of Activity

Frequent insect traffic around one exterior point, visible paper nests, insects entering wall voids or roof edges, and sudden aggressive activity near doors or outdoor seating areas are common warning signs.

Why They are a Problem

They are a problem because the risk is immediate. A nest near a walkway or entry can lead to stings, fear of using the area, and potentially dangerous situations for sensitive individuals.

Where They are Found

Common nesting sites include soffits, porch ceilings, eaves, sheds, play structures, shrubbery, deck areas, exterior lighting, and wall cavities. Commercial buildings may also see activity near signs, loading zones, and dumpster enclosures.

What Attracts Them

Sheltered nest sites, outdoor food and drink, flowering landscaping, and low-disturbance exterior areas can all support stinging insect activity. Once a favorable nesting area is found, reuse or nearby nesting may continue seasonally.

Wasps, hornets, and similar stinging insects can turn entryways, eaves, play areas, and work zones into places people avoid. In Northeast Florida, long warm seasons mean nests can stay active when families and customers are spending more time outside.

Defenders helps identify the nesting area, reduce immediate risk, and remove or treat the source in a safer, more controlled way than do-it-yourself approaches.
