Termites

A hidden structural pest that can cause costly damage over time
Termites are a high-priority pest because they attack structural wood and often remain unnoticed until damage or swarm activity is discovered. In Florida, the climate supports steady termite pressure, making prevention and early detection especially important.

About the Pest

Subterranean termites are a major concern in Northeast Florida because they travel from the soil into structural wood, often through concealed routes. Activity may develop around foundations, slab penetrations, crawlspaces, expansion joints, and moisture-prone construction areas.

Signs of Activity

Signs can include mud tubes, swarmers around windows or doors, discarded wings, wood that sounds hollow, bubbling paint, and damage discovered during renovation or inspection. Many properties show few visible signs until the issue is already well established.

Why They are a Problem

Termites are a problem because they damage structural wood, work silently, and can remain hidden for long periods. Waiting for obvious evidence often means the infestation has already been active for some time.

Where They are Found

They are most often found around foundations, crawlspaces, wood-to-soil contact points, siding edges, slab cracks, porch structures, and moisture-damaged areas. Commercial and residential buildings can both be affected where conducive conditions exist.

What Attracts Them

Moisture, wood contact with soil, leaking plumbing, poor drainage, untreated structural access points, and cellulose debris near the structure all increase termite risk. Florida humidity and rain patterns make these conditions especially important.

Termites are one of the most important pest concerns for property owners in Northeast Florida because damage can develop quietly long before visible signs appear. Moisture, wood-to-soil contact, and Florida’s climate all contribute to elevated risk.

Defenders helps property owners understand their level of risk, respond to active signs, and put proper termite protection in place before a hidden issue turns into a costly repair problem.
