Cockroaches

A sanitation-sensitive pest that thrives in warm, humid environments
Cockroaches are among the most unwelcome pests for homeowners and business owners because they spread quickly, hide well, and are strongly associated with sanitation concerns. In Northeast Florida, the climate supports both outdoor and indoor roach pressure across many property types.
Scientific Name: Periplaneta americana and Blattella germanica

About the Pest

Roaches exploit moisture, food residue, cluttered harborage, grease buildup, and easy shelter. Large outdoor species may enter from around drains, mulch, and foundation gaps, while smaller indoor species can establish persistent infestations in kitchens, bathrooms, break rooms, and storage spaces.

Signs of Activity

Signs include live roaches, especially at night, droppings that look like pepper or coffee grounds, egg cases, musty odor in heavy infestations, and activity around sinks, appliances, drain areas, cabinets, or utility penetrations.

Why They are a Problem

Cockroaches are a problem because they reproduce quickly, contaminate surfaces, and are difficult to eliminate with casual treatment. Even intermittent activity can signal a broader harborage issue behind walls, under appliances, or in shared utility paths.

Where They are Found

They are commonly found in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, under sinks, behind refrigerators, around floor drains, near water heaters, in garages, and around exterior entry points. Commercial kitchens and storage spaces are also frequent hot spots.

What Attracts Them

Food crumbs, grease, moisture, standing water, cardboard, clutter, leaking plumbing, overflowing trash, and unsealed gaps all make a structure more attractive to roaches. Outdoor pressure also increases where landscaping and moisture stay close to the foundation.

Cockroach issues in Northeast Florida are common because heat, humidity, moisture, and food access create steady pressure year-round. Some activity starts outdoors and moves inside, while other infestations build in kitchens, utility spaces, wall voids, or shared structures.

Defenders focuses on inspection, sanitation pressure points, moisture conditions, and targeted treatment so the problem is addressed at the source and not just where a roach happened to appear.
